Hiring a Nanny

Hiring a Nanny

When we hire a person to care for our child we are replacing ourselves. No one that you employ could be more important than the person who cares for your child when you&'re not around.

There are several ways to find a trustworthy and competent Nanny. My favorite is to ask a friend. Maybe someone you know and trust has used a Nanny that they no longer need or maybe they have a Nanny but don't need her full time and would love to share. This person is obviously going to be someone you can feel comfortable with. Make sure that you trust the person who is giving you the recommendation.

This is the ideal situation, but ideal situations don't always present themselves. Considering the way families move around now, young parents are often living far away from family and trusted friends and don't know where to turn. In this case you have to find someone you are comfortable with from an unknown source.

The first place to turn is the International Nanny Association&'s website to find nanny agencies that are members of this respected group. There are generally several agencies in your area. Make sure the agency you choose has been in business for at least one year and ask them for a few references.

Check their policies. Do they offer temporary nannies if your Nanny is under the weather and can&'t come to work one day? Check how their fees work, and what's the policy for a replacement nanny should the first nanny not work out?

Evaluate each agency's background screening process. Do they verify the references, check the applicant's driving record, run both national and local criminal background and sex abuse registry checks, confirm the applicant's social security number, drug screen applicants and have the applicant's physician sign off on a medical history form stating the applicant is well both emotionally and physically to work with children?

Once you have all of this information you can feel comfortable choosing from their list of applicants. After getting to know the Nanny you have hired, always rely on your gut reaction. If you for any reason you aren't 100% comfortable with this person, rely on your feelings!

You might say to yourself "But, it's so hard to find a good Nanny." Well you're right. It is, and that's because it's so important. When someone is caring for your child they're the most important person you will ever hire. So don't compromise!!!
